Anticipated Weather Conditions in Delhi: Mild Showers Predicted Amidst Warming Climate
Delhi Braces for Post-Monsoon Heatwave, Temporary Rainfall Offers Relief
Delhi experienced a brief respite from the scorching heat on September 17, 2025, as the city received some rainfall, marking the end of a 9-day dry spell. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a return to typical post-monsoon heat on September 19, 2025.
Yesterday, the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was 110, falling under the 'poor' category. The levels of PM2.5 and PM10 were 34 μg/m3 and 115 μg/m3, respectively. The city's humidity levels stood at 53%, with gentle winds blowing at 11.5 km/h from the southeast direction. Visibility in Delhi was at 10 kilometers due to misty conditions.
The IMD forecasts partly cloudy skies with a 44% chance of passing showers on September 18, 2025. Temperatures on this day are expected to remain between 31°C and 35°C. The minimum temperature recorded on September 17 was 30°C, while the maximum temperature is expected to reach 35.3°C.
The post-monsoon phase has begun in Delhi, with the monsoon withdrawal having ended on September 17, 2025. The southwest monsoon has started its withdrawal from parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. The withdrawal line currently passes through Bhatinda, Fatehabad, and Ajmer.
Residents should prepare for increasing temperatures and sunny conditions in the coming weeks. No significant rainfall is expected after today's showers for the next seven days over Delhi. The IMD has not issued any forecast for a return to typical post-monsoon heat on the days following September 18, 2025.
The recent 9-day dry spell experienced across Delhi-NCR is attributed to the monsoon withdrawal. The regions in North India that the southwest monsoon has already left include parts of northern India where the monsoon typically retreats by September. In the coming days, the monsoon is expected to continue shifting westward, gradually withdrawing from western and northwestern parts of India such as Rajasthan and adjoining areas.
On September 19, 2025, temperatures in Delhi are expected to climb to 37°C with sunny conditions. The brief rainfall today offers a temporary respite, but hot and dry weather will soon dominate the region's climate pattern. Wind patterns in Delhi will shift from southeast (10-15 km/h) in the morning to northeast during afternoon hours.
This marks the official end of the monsoon season for northern India. As the city prepares for the post-monsoon heat, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay cool and protect themselves from the poor air quality.
