Going Back in Time, Together
The docuseries takes readers through Joy Denalane and Max Herre's journey, marking their shared musical triumphs, as well as intimate moments like the birth of their children, their wedding, temporary separation, and eventual reunion.
At the helm of the camera, their old friend Sékou Neblett (53) stepped up as director. Neblett, a former member of the band Freundeskreis (1996-2007) and seasoned documentary filmmaker, managed to capture the essence of Joy and Max's story using material from his own archives as well as theirs.
"We've known Sékou Neblett for over 25 years, and his unique perspective on our story seemed compelling and worthy of sharing," Max Herre candidly commented.
The documentary intertwines with the making of Joy and Max's debut album together, "Alles Liebe," released in November 2024, which skyrocketed to number 5 on the album charts.
Stars Flock to Berlin Premiere
At a star-studded event in Berlin, companions, friends, family members, and influential guests gathered to marvel at the documentary. Among the attendees were Jannik Schümann, Lamin Leroy Gibba, Anna Dushime, Hadnet Tesfai, Jenny Augusta, Marie Nasemann, Marwa Eldessouky, and Frank Delle.
"'Max & Joy - Come Closer' unveils another chapter in German music history," Kristian Costa-Zahn, program director of ARD culture, elucidated. "Their joint venture in music shaped the landscape like no other couple, symbolizing the evolution of hip-hop, soul, and R&B in Germany."
After the event's conclusion, Joy Denalane took the stage and performed stirring numbers, including "Im Ghetto von Soweto (Auntie's House)," "Was auch immer," and "Bisschen mehr als Freundschaft." Joy seemed heartened by the overwhelming enthusiasm for the documentary, as part of her performance was captured in an Instagram story. When asked about Max Herre's absence, she tenderly shared, "My Maxi was under the weather, so I stepped in for him."
