Snow in Hamburg this Week and Predicting Weather

Anticipated Timing of First Snowfall in Hamburg: When Can We Expect It?

It's been snowing in parts of Germany already. But will it snow in Hamburg this week, and is a winter storm on the horizon? Can we even predict a white Christmas? Our website editor Eva Rabbe chatted with Frank Kahl from the German Weather Service (DWD) about the weather forecast for the next couple of days and the holiday season.

Snow Severity in Hamburg in the Coming Days

Quiteria, an outflow from the Tiefdruckgebiet in Scandinavia, moved towards Hamburg last night, according to Kahl from the DWD. Quiteria brings cold polar air, moisture, and light frost to the city. Today, temperatures are expected to be between 0°C and 3°C. Early Tuesday morning, light snowfall is likely in Hamburg: "We can expect a light layer of snow that won't last long as the ground is still too warm," says Kahl.

Brief Winter Weather

During the week, Kahl predicts regular rainfall and light frost throughout. The sun may make occasional appearances. More snow is not expected this week. By the weekend, it's expected to warm up: The night on Sunday will be frost-free, and temperatures on Monday are predicted to range around 9°C. Kahl says, "The winter will be brief."

White Christmas or Merry Crisis?

The DWD only discusses a white Christmas in Hamburg when there's a continuous snow layer on all three Christmas days. A preliminary prediction could be made at most one week before Christmas, around the fourth Advent weekend. A comprehensive prediction would only be possible three days before Christmas. According to Meteorologist Kahl, the climate crisis has lowered the likelihood of a white Christmas in Hamburg by 10%. Between 1961 and 1990, the probability was 16.7%. Between 1991 and 2020, it was 6.7%. The last white Christmas in Hamburg was in 2010.
