Unseasonable Aridity Predicted: Spring 2025 Forecast Indicates Prolonged Dry Spell Ahead - Anticipated Spring season of 2025 projected to experience insufficient rainfall
Germany Experiences Third-Driest Spring on Record, According to DWD
The German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach has released a preliminary assessment of Germany's spring weather conditions for 2025. The service's spokesperson acknowledged that this spring has been particularly dry, with only the springs of 1893 and 2011 experiencing less precipitation.
While the three-month period was cooler than previous springs, averaging 9.7°C, the spokesperson noted that temperatures could still reach relatively warm levels over the weekend, impacting the final average. Seasonal temperatures in spring 2024 were the highest recorded since measurements began.
The DWD's analysis revealed that the months of February 1 to April 13 were exceptionally dry, with an average precipitation of just 40 liters per square meter – the lowest since 1931. Although April saw a slight increase in rainfall, the overall dryness persisted throughout the season.
Regarding sunshine hours, Germany recorded 695 hours, which is approximately 33% more than the average for the same period from 1991 to 2020. The unusually sunny weather pattern partially contributed to the higher-than-average temperatures witnessed during the spring months.
With this assessment, the DWD encourages the public to remain cautious and mindful of potential drought-related challenges in the coming months. Details on the final weather assessment for spring 2025 are expected to be released upon the meteorological start of summer on June 1.
The DWD's preliminary assessment indicates that spring 2025 in Germany was the third-driest on record, as reported by the German Weather Service. Despite the cooler-than-average temperatures, the weather-forecasting service anticipates relatively warm levels over the weekend, potentially impacting the final average.
