- German Weather Service Makes Spring 2025 Assessment: Dryest Spring in Decades Anticipated
Anticipated Imbalance: Spring 2025 Predicted to be Exceptionally Arid - Anticipated Spring 2025 Season Forecast: Potential Water Scarcity Expected
The German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach is set to publish its spring 2025 assessment this Friday. According to preliminary findings, the spring of 2025 is shaping up to be significantly drier than any spring on record excluding 1893 and 2011.
The drought has been a persistent issue in the recent weeks, a DWD spokesperson said. As of now, the average temperature for spring 2025 stands at 9.7 degrees, cooler than the past years although a potential warm-up over the weekend may alter the figure.
Spring 2024 was previously recorded as the warmest in Germany since records began. The current season, however, has been notably warmer, with an average temperature 0.9 degrees above the 1991-2020 reference period. Spring 2025 also saw unusually high sunshine hours compared to the reference period, with 695 hours of sunshine—approximately 33% more than the average.
The below-average rainfall has been a noteworthy aspect of spring 2025. From February 1 to April 13, Germany experienced its lowest rainfall since records began in 1931, with 40 liters of rainfall per square meter. This scarcity of rainfall may lead to a hot summer in Germany.
While the spring season was significantly drier, the average temperature was cooler, making the overall weather pattern somewhat unique. More details will be made available with the formal assessment from the DWD on Friday.
The German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach is expected to reveal that the spring of 2025 is likely to be the driest in decades, based on their preliminary weather-forecasting. In the recent weeks leading up to spring 2025, Germany has experienced below-average rainfall, a persistent issue causing concern for the upcoming weather in Germany.
