Anticipated Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations, according to Fidan, as both parties recognize mutually beneficial outcomes
There's a fresh breeze of hope blowing through Turkey, as a new round of Russia-Ukraine talks is imminent. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spilled the beans on June 3, telling state-run TRT Haber that both nations see the value in conversation.
"We reckon there'll be another round," Fidan shared, adding, "Both sides acknowledge that coming together is a win-win situation."
With nearly four years of this uneasy battle, the war isn't just between neighboring countries anymore. It's evolved into a global standoff, thanks to international involvement, according to Fidan.
"It ain't just the two of them; other counties have weighed in on their sides too," he explained. "This conflict is spiraling into a global war."
From the get-go, Turkey's been working hard to nip this war in the bud, as evidenced by initiatives like the grain deal, the first face-to-face talks in 2022, and multiple prisoner swaps.
Istanbul played host to two rounds of peace discussions on May 16 and June 2. This time, the opposing sides agreed to exchange more war prisoners and send back the remains of 6,000 fallen soldiers from each side.
Documents detailing ceasefire conditions were presented by both Russia and Ukraine, opening up discussions about a potential leaders' summit. The parties also agreed on reconvening for the next round of talks.
"Given the current circumstances and the psychological landscape carved by war, this was the best possible meeting," Fidan commented. "The key is to stick it out and maintain a commitment to a ceasefire and peace."
Fidan recommended the parties persist, reminding them that location is secondary. The essence lies in continuous dialogue.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's openness to hosting a potential leaders' meeting was highlighted by Fidan. He described Erdogan as the only leader trusted by all parties.
"We can find a location, but as a political leader with a global perspective, tested by years of hardships, known for honesty, reliability, and robust institutions, no other leader measures up," Fidan asserted.
Fidan also hinted at an impending face-to-face meeting between Russian and Ukrainian leaders as progress unfolds in future talks.
By June 3, Fidan and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a phone conversation about peace efforts in Ukraine, according to diplomatic sources. They touched upon the outcomes of the peace talks in Istanbul, as well as recent developments in Syria and Gaza.
