Anticipated rise in temperature set for mid-May in Latvia

Latvia is experiencing an unseasonably cold clima, with temperatures dropping well below average for this time of year. The coldest weather is expected in central and southern Kurzeme on Wednesday night, with temperatures dropping to -1 degree Celsius. Places may experience temperatures as low as -3 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday nights.

Throughout the week, occasional light rain is expected, with the sun shining more often at the weekend. Afternoons will be mostly within +5 C to +10 C throughout the week, but will be slightly warmer at the weekend, up to +8 C to +13 C.

Despite the cold, no cities in Latvia are forecasted to have temperatures below -3°C on Thursday or Friday evening. This is good news for cities like Riga and Jurmala, which will remain well above freezing during these nights.

The first five days of May in 2023 were warmer than the average temperature for the same period in Latvia. However, they were still colder than the warmest starts in recent years. In fact, Latvia experienced a cold start to May this year, with temperatures below the average for the first five days.

In 2023, Latvia experienced cold records, including frosts as low as -6.8 degrees on the morning of 6 May in the Vidzeme highlands. This was the coldest start to May in Latvia since 1980, when the average temperature for the first five days was just 3.1 degrees.

Frosts are expected at night throughout the week, and while temperatures will slightly rise early next week, significantly warmer weather is not expected before 15 May. It's a reminder to bundle up and stay warm as Latvia braces for another cold night.
