Anticipated Mosquito Invasion in Omsk Region Again
A Fresh Spin
Hold onto your swatters, Omsk residents! It seems the dreaded mosquito invasion from last spring might be returning. According to Alexander Gaiyvas, a scientist at the Omsk State Agricultural University, the situation largely depends on the weather in May, as stated in an interview with "SuperOmsk."
You may have noticed an increase in mosquito swarms lately. These are known as spring species that develop in warm water. Currently, we're seeing ideal conditions for their reproduction — high soil moisture, stable warm temperatures, warmed water, abundant grass. If this trend continues in May, their population will grow rapidly. As Gaiyvas explained, the first two weeks of May will be crucial.
Gaiyvas noted that if weather conditions remain the same, mosquito populations will increase geometrically. However, if a dry, hot weather pattern emerges, the situation may improve somewhat.
Pay attention, as natural development in this year is happening about 10 days earlier than usual. Look at how quickly the grass is growing. The same applies to insects. Therefore, we should first focus on May, as it is typically a dry and warm month for Omsk region. If it turns out to be as dry and hot as it was 2-3 years ago, it will suppress the mosquito population somewhat, but if it remains wet and relatively warm, then the mosquito population will continue to grow.
The weather forecast for May supports Gaiyvas' concern. Predicted rain combined with warm temperatures will create ideal conditions for insect breeding. The periods from May 9-12 and May 13-16, when meteorologists predict heavy rainfall at temperatures of +14 to +24 °C, will be particularly favorable for mosquitoes.
Rosgidromet has predicted that May will be rainy but not excessively hot. Thus, based on the forecast, Omsk region may face another swarm of bloodsuckers.

- The Omsk State Agricultural University's scientist, Alexander Gaiyvas, mentioned in the interview with "SuperOmsk," believes that the moisture levels and temperatures in May are ideal for the reproduction of spring mosquito species.
- Gaiyvas warns that if the weather continues to be warm and wet in May, the mosquito population in Omsk could grow rapidly, due to their ideal breeding conditions.
- In an environmental science context, Gaiyvas' concern about the potential mosquito invasion is relevant to general news and weather forecasting, as this could have a significant impact on the Omsk community.
- According to the weather forecast for May, there will be periods of heavy rainfall at warm temperatures between May 9-12 and May 13-16, which could create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding, potentially leading to an increase in mosquito populations.
- Based on the current weather forecast, Rosgidromet predicts that May will be rainy but not excessively hot, suggesting that the Omsk region may face another mosquito invasion this year.
