"Max & Joy: Unveiling Intimacy" - Premiere of an Engaging Music Doc

All-Encompassing Spectacle of the Music-Documentary Premier - Anticipated Live Debut for the Musical Documentary

Let's cut to the chase! Joy Denalane, 51, threw a bash for the premiere of her ARD docuseries, "Max & Joy: Unveiling Intimacy," at the Astor Film Lounge in Berlin on the 7th of May. Regrettably, Max Herre, 52, was a no-show. The music doc, now available on Mediathek, offers an up-close look at one of Germany's most influential musical pairs' personal and professional lives.

"Delving into the eyes of my younger self was exhilarating, surprising, emotional, and sometimes challenging," Joy Denalane shared her feelings during the doc's production. "Conversations unfolded, and memories resurfaced, and it all stayed with me."

A Journey through the Musical Archive

The series follows Joy Denalane and Max Herre, who have been shaping the German music scene for over 25 years and navigated the highs and lows of life together. It sheds light on their shared musical journey, their successes, but also personal milestones like the birth of their children, their wedding, their brief separation, and their reunion.

Their long-term friend, Sékou Neblett, 53, who was previously part of the band Freundeskreis (1996-2007) and later made a career as a screenwriter and documentary filmmaker, directed the docuseries. "Joy Denalane and Max Herre have been friends for over 25 years," Max Herre elaborated. "Sékou's perspective on his friends Max & Joy seemed interesting and worth sharing. And that's the doc you see, with material from his archives and ours."

The docuseries also accompanies the couple in the process of creating their first joint album "Alles Liebe," which hit the charts in November 2024 and debuted at number 5.

A-Listers Gather for the Berlin Premiere

At the Berlin premiere on the 7th of May, friends, family members, and notable guests enjoyed their first look at the three-part docuseries. Luminaries such as Jannik Schümann, Lamin Leroy Gibba, Anna Dushime, Hadnet Tesfai, Jenny Augusta, Marie Nasemann, Marwa Eldessouky, and Frank Delle were among the guests.

"'Max & Joy: Unveiling Intimacy,' is yet another chapter in German music history," explained Kristian Costa-Zahn, Program Director of ARD Culture. "Joy Denalane and Max Herre have left an indelible mark on the music scene like no other couple, and their joint journey mirrors the evolution of hip-hop, soul, and R&B in Germany."

Following the premiere, Joy Denalane performed "Im Ghetto von Soweto (Auntie's House)," "Was ook immer," and "Bisschen mehr als Freundschaft" and was noticeably moved by the audience's enthusiasm for the docuseries. A snippet of her performance can be found on Instagram - and as a comment, the Berlin musician explained why Max Herre was absent from the event: "Because my Maxi was under the weather, I stepped in for him."
