Anticipated Leadership: Lipowitz Set to Assume Role

Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy Link It's crunch time at Paris-Nizza, one of the prestigious spring classics in cycling. With Vingegaard out due to a crash, German sensation Lipowitz has his shot at a major upset.

Paris-Nizza has been a battleground for cycling giants, but this year, German contender Florian Lipowitz is poised to claim his first significant win, standing only 37 seconds behind leader Matteo Jorgenson, heading into the series-ending 120-kilometer stage on Sunday. Lipowitz successfully defended the white jersey of the best young rider after the shortened seventh stage from Nizza to Auron.

Australian Michael Storer of Tudor Pro Cycling Team clinched the stage victory with a summit finish in Auron, beating a breakaway group. Swiss rider Mauro Schmid and German Georg Steinhauser followed closely. Lipowitz crossed the line eighth amidst frigid and snowy conditions, expressing optimism about finishing the tour on the podium.

A Setback for Lipowitz's Rival

Mattias Skjelmose, Lipowitz's main contender for the white jersey, had to abandon the race following a crash into a road barrier, shattering his head on the asphalt. Skjelmose, formerly third in the overall standings, was transported to the hospital by ambulance, as reported by his team Lidl-Trek on Twitter.

Climate misfortunes had already struck cycling sensation Jonas Vingegaard on Thursday when he crashed in Paris-Nizza 2025. The dual Tour de France victor didn't participate in the sixth stage the following day. In response, the organizers opted to alter the queen stage's route in the Alps, omitting climbs to Col de Belvedere and Col de La Colmiane. The race reaches its conclusion in Nizza on Sunday.
