North Carolina is preparing to launch mobile sports betting, with Governor Roy Cooper expressing satisfaction with the lottery's efforts to get the state ready for the new market. If the current pace of progress continues, there's growing optimism that betting apps could go live before the NCAA Tournament begins, making March Madness a significant event for sports bettors in the state.

The North Carolina Lottery Commission has scheduled meetings for its Sports Committee and Commission in January, where operators are expected to submit applications. These meetings, however, have not yet shared their agendas publicly.

The lottery commission previously stated that North Carolina's mobile sports wagering launch would occur after the February 11 Super Bowl, but recent developments suggest an earlier start date could be achievable. Governor Cooper stated in a radio interview that the goal is to get mobile sports betting out before March Madness.

Major sports betting operators, such as bet365, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, ESPN BET, Fanatics Sportsbook, and FanDuel, are expected to be among the first apps in North Carolina's mobile betting market. This is significant considering the large men's and women's basketball followings at universities like Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, and Wake Forest, making March Madness a notable event for sports bettors in the state.

The lottery is currently accepting and approving operator license applications for legal sports betting. However, an official launch of North Carolina sports betting is still more than a month away, with the lottery aiming to have the mobile market up and running before the mid-June deadline set by state legislation.

The meetings of the Lottery Sports Committee and the Lottery Commission, where approvals for sports betting operators are expected to be granted, are scheduled for September 26 and 27, 2023. Cooper stated that the lottery is working on getting sports betting out as fast as they can to cater to the growing interest in mobile sports betting.

Stay tuned for updates as North Carolina moves closer to launching its mobile sports betting market.
