Anticipated Launch of a New Lord of the Rings Series Set for 2027

Get Ready for Gollum's Comeback: "Lord of the Rings" Sequel Hits Theaters in 2027

Fans of Middle-earth are in for a treat! Incoming from Warner Bros., the latest instalment of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga, The Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, arrives on the big screen in 2027.

Three long decades have passed since the first instalment of the blockbuster trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, graced our screens. Master storyteller Peter Jackson revolutionized the fantasy universe with his visionary adaptation of Tolkien's novel, setting new standards for big-screen adventures. The series' annex, the Hobbit trilogy, although not quite as magical, still captured our imagination.

Tolkien enthusiasts can now rejoice, as a fresh escapade in Middle-earth unfolds. According to industry insider magazine "Variety", the release date for The Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum is ensconced for December 17, 2027.

Differences abound between this new production and previous films. Unlike the source materials, this movie will be woven from individual themes and passages from Tolkien's novels. A short film titled The Hunt for Gollum was released in 2009 as part of a fan project. Though made with limited budget and resources, the film managed to capture some attention. It's uncertain to what extent the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster will be inspired by the erstwhile film.

Let's Talk Directors: Andy Serkis at the Helm

Jackson assumes a supporting role for this production and hands the director's baton to none other than Andy Serkis, who famously spearheaded Gollum's character in the previous The Lord of the Rings films. Serkis' other forays into direction include Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The studio initially announced the film's theatrical debut for 2026, but a delay of one year has been unveiled.

Philippa Boyens, a cornerstone of the production trio for the original trilogy alongside Jackson and Fran Walsh, revealed to "Empire" magazine that Hunt for Gollum promises an intense, riveting tale. The action unfolds during the period following Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday party and before the Fellowship sets foot in Moria. Boyens further confided, "It's a unique and uncharted story, told from the perspective of this enigmatic creature."

Franchise Faithfulness: What to Expect

While there's no official word on other cast members, veteran stars like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have expressed interest, should the story warrant their return.

The production team once again comprises Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens. Warner Bros. has underscored the trio's involvement in every stage of the film's creation.

Add the new film to your list, as it's bound to be another box-office triumph for Warner Bros. Both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies grossed approximately 2.9 billion USD worldwide. The franchise's last foray on the big screen was "The Lord of the Rings: Battle of Rohirrim", which concluded in December 2024.

Stay tuned, as Warner Bros. has announced several exciting projects lined up alongside Hunt for Gollum:

  • Evil Dead (July 24, 2026)
  • Remain, directed by M. Night Shyamalan starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters (October 23, 2026)
  1. Despite the anticipated release of Gollum's comeback in the new Lord of the Rings sequel in 2027, I'm not going to be a big fan of this, given the delay from the initially announced 2026 release date.
  2. In contrast to the short film The Hunt for Gollum released in 2009, the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster is expected to have a significantly larger budget and scale, as suggested by its status as a major studio production.
  3. Unlike other movies and TV shows in the entertainment industry, the salary of the cast and crew for The Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum has not yet been disclosed, adding to the intrigue surrounding the movie ahead of its 2027 release.
  4. Although Andy Serkis, the director of The Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, has worked on other movies like Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it remains to be seen whether he can replicate the success of Peter Jackson's direction in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy when the film is released in 2027.
