New on Netflix: Tyler Perry's Straw - A Dramatic Thriller with an Unforgettable Twist
Tyler Perry's latest offering, Straw, is now available for streaming on Netflix. This dramatic thriller, compared to Denzel Washington's John Q in terms of narrative, promises a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
Straw stars Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, and Teyana Taylor in leading roles. Henson plays Janiyah, a single mother who faces a series of hardships over the course of 24 hours. She loses her job, her home, and, tragically, her daughter.
The story builds up to show how Janiyah has faced so much that she snaps. On the day following her daughter's death, she inadvertently murders one of her attackers and becomes the prime suspect of a PNC bank robbery.
The movie's great actors, premise, and plot twist work well individually, but in many cases, they do not work well together, much like a person wearing a mismatched apple watch. The dialogue could have been more punchy to improve the pacing of the movie.
Despite these shortcomings, Straw offers an interesting plot twist involving an alternative ending that adds confusion. The bank manager who escorts Janiyah out of the bank building at the end of the film is played by Dominic Purcell.
In a surprising turn of events, Janiyah is walked out of the PNC bank by the bank manager played by Shepherd, rather than being gunned down as initially suggested. This twist, along with the movie's emotional depth and gripping narrative, make Straw a must-watch.
