Breaking News: South Korea's Former President and First Lady Facing Intense Scrutiny

In a dramatic turn of events, South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, former First Lady Kim Keon Hee, find themselves at the centre of a series of investigations led by a special prosecutor.

Yoon, who has been in custody, has been resisting the special counsel’s attempts to question him. His obstruction of the arrest attempt has sparked controversy, with Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho criticizing him for obstructing the execution of the warrant and behaving in a "bizarre manner." The special counsel is considering charges including treason.

Meanwhile, the special counsel team is scheduled to investigate Kim on Wednesday. Prosecutors have formally requested an arrest warrant for Kim, who was recently interrogated for about seven hours. If Kim decides to comply with Wednesday’s summons, she will become the first former first lady to appear for questioning by a special counsel as a suspect.

The investigations into Yoon and Kim are part of three ongoing probes led by a special prosecutor appointed under the current government of President Lee Jae Myung, following Yoon's conservative administration. Allegations against Kim include violations of capital market, financial investment, and political funding laws, plus accusations of manipulating candidate selections for a parliamentary by-election in 2022.

The special counsel team plans to make another attempt to arrest Yoon for questioning. They have warned him that they would follow through on the next attempt "even if it requires the use of physical force." Kim's attorney announced in mid-July that the former first lady will cooperate with the special counsel investigation.

The ongoing investigation has drawn criticism from some legal representatives, who have accused the special counsel team of engaging in "political propaganda and a witch hunt," and of disclosing inappropriate details unrelated to the case and going beyond the scope of the public's right to know.

This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further details.
