Anticipated Details on The Third Season of The Last of Us: Expected Launch, Actors, Storyline, and Latest Updates
Revamped Reality:
Gear up, folks! The third installment of our favorite post-apocalyptic drama, The Last of Us, is making its way to screens soon. After the jaw-dropping cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, it's clear there's plenty more story left to unfold from The Last of Us Part 2 game. And with the upcoming season, we'll get to see way more of the show's new antagonist, Abby, played by the fantastic Kaitlyn Dever.
Greenlit to Return:
The cat's out of the bag—Season 3 has officially been given the go-ahead (and rumors of a potential Season 4 aren't far behind!). It seems more than likely that Season 3 will adapt the second half of the video game sequel, leaving a plethora of content for us to dig into.
Even though Season 3 is still a ways off, we've got all the juice you need to know about The Last of Us Season 3, from our best-guessed release date to casting news and plot predictions. We've even cleared up any confusion about the show's timeline and the surprising ending of Season 2.
Save the Date?
Since Season 1 aired in 2023 and Season 2 premiered in 2025, we can expect a similar two-year wait for Season 3. Co-showrunner and head writer Craig Mazin even recently hinted that they haven't yet begun writing Season 3. With Season 2 now over, work is likely to commence soon, and we'll get a better idea of the release date as time goes on. For now, our best guess is 2027.
What's Next for Ellie and Abby?
The Last of Us Season 3 will follow Ellie as she sets out for revenge against Abby, who brutally murders Joel after it's revealed that the surgeon Joel killed at the end of Season 1 was actually Abby's father. The season will continue to adapt The Last of Us Part 2, which showcases Ellie's hunt for Abby.
Speculative Spoilers Ahead:
Spoiler alert! The season will likely start with Abby's Seattle Day One, Two, and Three, but it's possible that the fourth season will center on The Farm and Santa Barbara, saving Abby and Ellie's final confrontation until then.
Casting News:
Though her friends are dead, Season 3 will bring her crew back — although we're not sure if Lev and Yara, important characters in Ellie's story, will appear. Bella Ramsey and Isabela Merced will return, as well as Jeffrey Wright's chilling Isaac. We can also expect some flashbacks featuring deceased characters like Jesse and Joel.
It's worth noting that Catherine O'Hara, who played Perry, said she wouldn't be appearing in Season 3 because of its central focus on Abby. We also likely won't revisit Jackson in Season 3, but potential new characters created specifically for the show will appear. The Seraphites will make a return, given their role as major enemies to the WLF.
Stay Tuned for More:
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (the brains behind The Last of Us video game franchise) are set to return as showrunners and head writers, with screenwriter Halley Gross likely to rejoin them. Keep an eye out for updates and our reviews as Season 3 production gets underway.
