Anticipated Cooling Follows Major Heatwave
Forecast for Post-Heatwave Weather in Germany
After a prolonged heatwave in Germany from July 30 to August 6, temperatures are expected to remain warm but slightly cooler in the coming days. Meteorologist Adrian Leyser Sturm from the German Weather Service predicts that the warm, not overly hot, and sunny summer weather will continue into next week.
During the heatwave, daytime temperatures soared to as high as 38°C. However, after August 6, daytime highs are forecasted to range between 28-32°C. Nighttime lows will cool down to around 14-18°C.
The heatwave is expected to last until the weekend, with Thursday and Friday seeing temperatures widely above 30°C. Isolated heavy thunderstorms are expected on these days, particularly in the afternoons and evenings, and in the mountainous regions. Some places may experience tropical nights, with temperatures not dropping below 20°C even at night.
Friday will see temperatures between 31 and 37 degrees, and on Saturday, it may be slightly warmer in the southwest, with temperatures ranging between 32 and 38°C. Along the coasts, it will not be as hot due to sea breeze. Overnight, it will cool down to 16 to 23 degrees in most places.
In the north, temperatures on Saturday will range between 20 and 25 degrees. The north will also experience high fog on Saturday, which will only slowly dissipate. Some showers are expected in the west and northwest on Friday, with shower and isolated heavy thunderstorms forecast for the southeast on Saturday.
From August 11 onward, there is a forecast for another wave of warm air masses impacting Western and Central Europe, with temperatures climbing above 35°C between August 13 and August 15. This suggests that after the initial heat wave, another period of intense heat could occur mid-August.
The weather conditions after the initial heat wave will remain dominated by stable, dry, and sunny weather, but with some risk of localized thunderstorms and elevated wildfire hazards due to drought and heat. The heat dome responsible for the extreme heat in early August is expected to persist into mid-August, maintaining high temperatures over a broader area of Europe.
In summary, expect warm but slightly reduced daytime highs in Germany post-August 6, with possible intermittent heat spikes (>35°C) mid-August. Nights will cooler around 14–18°C. Limited rain, below normal totals with some dry and sunny spells are forecast. The heat wave is expected to end on Saturday, with a cold front displacing the sultry heat from Germany by the weekend. Overall, weather conditions remain generally hot and dry with the potential for renewed heat waves by mid-August.
Despite a gradual cool-down after the heatwave, other parts of Germany may still experience temperatures exceeding 35°C in the forecasted heatwave resurgence mid-August. After the heatwave ends on the weekend, the weather-forecasting predicts the continuation of warm, dry, and sunny weather, but with an increased risk of localized thunderstorms and elevated wildfire hazards.
