Anticipated cessation of intense cold spell over northwest India starting from January 19th.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for cold wave conditions in several parts of North India and Northwest India. The conditions are expected to continue until January 18, with a moderation expected from January 19.

Ground frost conditions are likely in isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh on January 17 and 18. The IMD has also stated that cool wave to extreme cold wave conditions are likely over many components of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until Tuesday, and in separate pockets on Wednesday.

Cold wave conditions in isolated pockets are also likely over Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra, and Kutch on January 17-18. In contrast, no significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over the remainder of North India for the next 4-5 days.

On Monday, Lodhi Road and Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 1.6°C and 1.4°C respectively, while Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 6.0°C. Safdarjung in Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 4.6°C on January 17.

A fresh western disturbance is anticipated to affect the western Himalayan region from January 18 evening. This western disturbance may bring light/moderate/isolated rains and snowfall to Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from January 18 to 20. Another energetic western disruption is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from the night of January 20 and adjacent levels of Northwest India from January 22.

Minimum temperatures are then expected to rise by 4-6 degrees Celsius during January 19-21. Minimum temperatures are expected to fall by about 2 degrees Celsius over many components of Northwest India until January 17 morning, with no significant change until January 18.

It is important to note that precise forecasts and temperature trends for the specified January 18–21, 2023 period are not found in the current search results. Consulting archives from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) or trusted regional weather services would be necessary for detailed historical weather forecasts or observations for that period.

Cold wave conditions are characterized by sharp drops in night and day temperatures, sometimes due to western disturbances or Arctic air incursions, leading to dense fog, frost, and minimum temperatures well below average during such spells.

  1. As expected, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that environmental-science conditions, such as cold wave, may continue in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until Tuesday, possibly extending into separate pockets on Wednesday.
  2. Additionally, frost conditions, a type of weather event, may occur in isolated places over Saurashtra, Kutch, Himachal Pradesh, and several other regions, such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh, on January 17 and 18.
