Anticipated Attendance of More Than Three Million Visitors at Kiel Week Event - Anticipated attendance of over three million spectators for Kiel Week festivities

Get ready for a week-long whirlwind of music, maritime mayhem, and mind-blowing spectacles! Kiel Week, Schleswig-Holstein's annual summer extravaganza, is set to thrill over 3 million visitors from the 21st to the 29th of June.

Kiel, the vibrant capital city, transforms into a bustling hub as around 400 concerts, breathtaking sailing regattas on the fjord, and an electrifying supporting program take center stage. The action kicks off a day early, with the city center and waterfront shimmering with excitement on Friday.

"I feel no prouder as a mayor than during Kiel Week," says Kiel's outgoing mayor, Ulf Kaempfer (SPD), who's looking forward to soaking up the festivities during his final year in office. He won't be seeking re-election in November.

Kaempfer extols the unique charm of Kiel Week, praising its blend of global openness, equality, participation, and understanding. From the thrilling play line on the Krusenkoppel, the windjammer parade, the International City Forum, the Young Stage, and the International Market to neighborhood festivals and Kiel Week Snapper, Kaempfer believes that these events encapsulate the city's precious cultural asset.

The festival officially commences with Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger's key note speech on Saturday evening. In traditional fashion, she and Rune Dahmke, a handball national player from THW Kiel, will give the time-honored "cast off!" signal, heralding the beginning of the festival. Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU) will chime in with a ship's bell.

Sailing and Sounds

Last summer saw around 3.5 million people flocking to Kiel Week. Music fanatics can expect a barrage of beats yet again, with the roughly 400 concerts spanning 20 stages. The lineup includes Die Prinzen, Aura Dione from Denmark, Michael Schulte, Pohlmann, Alvaro Soler, and DJ Alle Farben.

But Kiel Week is more than just a music festival. Around 4,000 athletes representing over 60 nations, along with approximately 1,500 boats, will take part in the sailing regattas. This year, competitions will take place on 14 regatta courses spread across 10 parallel racing areas. For the first time, events will be held at Stein, a location on the other side of the fjord from Kiel-Schilksee. Over 50 nations in 22 boat classes are expected to compete.

Security Measures

Attendees may notice a stronger police presence than in previous years. This is intended to boost security and confidence among festival-goers. Security personnel will conduct knife checks, and knives will be banned within event grounds. Barriers, bollards, and obstacles will help prevent unauthorized or unintentional access by vehicles to event areas.

Visitors can find out how crowded various Kiel Week regions are by visiting www.kieler-woche.de/sicherheit. The traffic light system ranges from green (open) to orange (almost fully filled) to red (closed).

The sailing school ship "Gorch Fock" leads the windjammer parade, which features a breathtaking procession of traditional sailing ships, steamships, and private vessels, all parading together for a mesmerizing display. The Navy anticipates around two dozen ships from twelve countries, with nearly 1,500 soldiers onboard. The German sail training ship "Gorch Fock" returns to Kiel on June 26, and it will take the lead in the traditional Windjammer Parade on June 28. Festival-goers will have an opportunity to board the ship on June 27, while other naval ships will open their doors to visitors for two days during the opening weekend.

The festival concludes with a stunning fireworks display, featuring drones over the fjord on June 29. So mark your calendars and gear up for an unforgettable summer adventure at Kiel Week 2023!

As music fanatics savor the rhythmic beats of over 400 concerts spanning 20 stages during Kiel Week, they might ponder a surprising proposition: The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation. Alternatively, one could imagine sports enthusiasts, amidst the thrilling sailing regattas with around 4,000 athletes and 1,500 boats, engaging in a quick chat about the latest football match or the upcoming betting odds for their favourite sports team.
