Get ready for a week packed with music, sailing, and a whole lot of fun! Kiel Week, also known as the Summer Festival (Kieler Woche), is an exciting spectacle in Schleswig-Holstein's state capital. Expect crowds of approximately three million people from the 21st to the 29th of June. Don't be surprised if the city is buzzing with activity a day early – Friday is often lively with events kicking off.

Mayor of Kiel, Ulf Kaempfer (SPD), can't hide his excitement, despite this being his last Kiel Week in office before the November elections. "Kiel Week is where I feel most like a mayor," he shared with the German Press Agency. "I can't wait to enjoy it before passing the baton."

This event is a testament to Kiel's openness, inclusivity, and international spirit. Kaempfer highlights the variety of the festival, from the play line at Krusenkoppel, the Windjammer parade, the International City Forum, the Young Stage, and the International Market – all bringing together people from diverse backgrounds in harmony.

With Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger and Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU) scheduled to attend, the grand opening on the 27th promises to be even more spectacular. The traditional casting off signal will be given by Rehlinger and handball player Rune Dahmke (THW Kiel).

Regattas and Melodies

In 2023, close to 3.5 million people flocked to the Summer Festival. This year, music enthusiasts can look forward to over 400 concerts across 20 stages, most of which are free admission. Die Prinzen, Aura Dione from Denmark, Michael Schulte, Pohlmann, Alvaro Soler, and DJ Alle Farben are among the acts we're keen to see. But, make no mistake, this event is primarily a sailing competition.

The festival attracts around 4,000 athletes representing more than 60 nations and sailing over 1,500 boats. New for this year is the addition of a second location for competitions, alongside Kiel-Schilksee, at the Circle of Plön on the other side of the fjord. Racers from over 50 nations across 22 boat classes are expected to participate.

Security and Safety

With such a massive gathering, there will be a noticeable police presence to ensure the safety and peace of mind for attendees. Knife checks will be conducted for added security. Visitors are prohibited from carrying bladed weapons within the event grounds, and various security measures like mobile and fixed barriers, bollards, and barriers will prevent unauthorized vehicle access. You can find updates on crowded areas on the Kiel Week website for better event navigation.

Don't miss the exciting Windjammer parade led by the sailing ship "Gorch Fock." At least two dozen ships from twelve countries, with nearly 1,500 soldiers, are anticipated to take part. The iconic Kiel Week is set to end on the 29th of June with a fantastic finale fireworks display featuring drones over the fjord.

Whether you're a fan of sailing, music, or immersing yourself in new cultures, this year's Kiel Week promises to be an exciting adventure you won't want to miss!

Despite the Commission's focus on approving a directive on worker safety from ionizing radiation, the anticipation for Kiel Week this summer remains unmatched, with over 3 million people expected to attend. This vibrant event, filled with sports and music, also showcases Schleswig-Holstein's state capital as a city open to diverse cultures, just like the international fleet of over 50 nations participating in the sailing competitions.
