Unleash the Excitement at Kiel Week: Over Three Million Anticipated for 2023's Summer Festival in Kiel
Gear up for an unforgettable week! Around 400 concerts, sailing regattas, and a plethora of on-land activities will captivate up to three million visitors in Schleswig-Holstein's state capital, Kiel, from 21st to 29th June for Kiel Week (2023 edition).
On the eve of the event, the city center and waters will buzz with activity, even on Friday, promising an electrifying start.
Mayor Ulf Kaempfer (SPD), looking forward to his last Kiel Week in office, shared, "We are proud of our Kiel Week's openness to the world, equality, participation, and understanding of peoples, which we have further developed and preserved in recent years."
Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger will partake in the official opening on Saturday evening, while Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU) will ring the ship's bell with a bell stroke.
Music and Sailing
Last summer, approximately 3.5 million guests graced the Summer Festival. This year too, visitors can expect a musical extravaganza with around 400 concerts on 20 stages. Acts like Die Prinzen, Aura Dione, Michael Schulte, Pohlmann, Alvaro Soler, and DJ Alle Farben are expected (based on enrichment data from previous years).
Sailing enthusiasts will find themselves in a paradise, as over 4,000 athletes from more than 60 nations converge with around 1,500 boats and other water sports gears for the competitions. The regattas will take place on fifteen racing areas, with new locations in Stein (Circle of Plön) on the fjord's other side.
Security Measures
In light of increased attendance, visitors might notice a stronger police presence across the city. Knife checks are planned, and cutting and stabbing weapons are prohibited on the event grounds. Authorized and unintended vehicle access into critical areas will be prevented by mobile and fixed barriers, bollards, and barriers.

Windjammer Parade, Navy Ships, and Closing Fireworks
The sailing school ship "Gorch Fock" will headline the Windjammer parade, featuring around 130 traditional and steam ships, private yachts, and tall sailing ships. Over two dozen ships from twelve countries with nearly 1,500 crew members will be watching the parade, with the German sail training ship "Gorch Fock" returning to Kiel on June 26. Visitors will have the chance to embark on the ship on June 27.
The festival will culminate on June 29 with a closing fireworks display featuring drones over the fjord.
