Danish Prime Minister's Upcoming Trip to Greenland Faces Criticism from Local Official

Anticipated Agenda for Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's Journey to Greenland

Greenland: Prime Minister's Visit Sparks Criticism

The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to Greenland has stirred controversy, with a senior Greenlandic official expressing disapproval of the timing.

Frederiksen's impending trip to Greenland aims to display unity within the Danish realm, but it's facing criticism due to the pressure exerted by US President Donald Trump's controversial statements and last week's visit of Vice President JD Vance to the Pittufik Space Base. According to Greenland expert and researcher Ulrik Pram Gad of the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS), Frederiksen's visit signals her intention to strengthen ties with the newly elected Greenlandic government.

In the face of US threats to acquire Greenland, the island's new Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has been vociferous: "The United States will not get Greenland. We don't belong to anyone else. We decide our own future," he asserted in a Facebook post. Timing-wise, Frederiksen's visit follows Trump's assertive claims about Greenland and Vance's controversial base visit.

Outgoing Greenlandic PM Múte B. Egede has advocated for stronger international backing against US pressure on Greenland. However, preparations for Frederiksen's visit have encountered challenges due to Greenland's official confirmation of the new government only next Monday, a criticism similarly raised about Vance's visit.

Greenland's new foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, highlighted these concerns about the timing of the Danish visit. Yet, Nielsen supported Frederiksen's visit citing it as a welcome sign of solidarity.

According to Gad, the criticism from Greenland's foreign minister may serve as a reminder to Denmark about their unequal relationship. "This might be a way to remind Denmark to look inwards. It's a way to say to Mette Frederiksen that we are close friends, but we are two different peoples and countries who must have equal value," he explained.

On the geopolitical front, the visit is not expected to initiate discussions about Greenlandic independence. Gad anticipates a more conversational, rather than negotiative, atmosphere during the visit, which will last from Wednesday to Friday. He also acknowledges the concerns of some in Greenland about potential US aggression, noting that Frederiksen's visit might provide a sense of reassurance.
