Goonies Fever Takes Over Astoria

Step back to the '80s with Astoria, Oregon, birthplace of the legendary film, "The Goonies." The high-spirited adventure flick, co-produced by Steven Spielberg, was an instant hit when it premiered in 1985. But this tale of a band of youngsters on a wild treasure hunt captivated more than just audiences, it put Astoria on the map.

While not everyone was enamored with the film's incessant young banter, cluttered scenes, and cave-filled darkness (Pauline Kael, a renowned critic, notably voiced her disapproval), the majority greeted it with open arms. So much so, it became an '80s summertime sensation that hinted at an enduring classic status.

However, "The Goonies" proved to be something of a plot twist itself, as its popularity endured and even grew. The energy-filled setting and filming locations in and around Astoria continue to attract generations of fans seeking to relive the magic of the movie.

Embracing its cinematic legacy, in 2010, the city's mayor declared June 7 as "Goonies Day" to mark the 25th anniversary of the film’s release. This set the stage for annual "Goonies Weekend" festivities in early June, culminating in this year's 40th birthday bash.

David Reid, executive director of the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce, recognizes the importance of "Goonies" tourism to the community. Though he can't reveal exact numbers, he emphasizes that "film tourism" is crucial to the local economy, with hits like "The Goonies," Kindergarten Cop," Free Willy," and "Short Circuit" drawing fans from far and wide.

Among these films, "The Goonies" reigns supreme, with special anniversaries, like the 25th and 30th anniversary celebrations, drawing 10,000 to 12,000 visitors from around the world, according to Reid.

Mac Burns, director of the Clatsop County Historical Society, notes that these celebrations trace their roots back to the 20th anniversary of the movie. Initial discussions among fans turned into an annual tradition of gathering in Astoria on June 7, the film's release date. This developed into the "Goonies Weekend" events we know today.

The Oregon Film Museum, housed in the old Clatsop County Jail—seen early in the film during the Fratelli family's jailbreak—offers visitors a glimpse of Oregon-made films, with a special focus on "The Goonies." The museum also features an interactive "Hot Set," allowing visitors to create their own movies.

Proceeds from the "Goonies Weekend" events support an expansion project for the Oregon Film Museum, aiming to move beyond its current 800-square-foot space, which the museum has clearly outgrown.

"The Goonies" has proven to be an enduring icon, attracting visitors from various generations, according to Burns. While the film museum initially served as a temporary attraction, it has become a permanent fixture due to its popular appeal with fans. From fans identifying with the underdog hero Chunk, to Asian audiences resonating with Data, the emotional connections fans have with the movie never cease to amaze Burns.

This year's "Goonies Weekend," happening June 5-8, showcases a variety of activities, such as treasure hunts, costume contests, film screenings, and meetings with cast and crew members. Tickets and information on events can be found on the official "Goonies Weekend" website.
