Anti-Trump demonstrator faces potential expulsion threat.
Rebel Journalist's Arrest Sparks Outcry
In a spine-chilling turn of events, a Salvadoran journalist living in the U.S. for two decades, known for his gutsy reporting on immigration issues, has been slapped with an unwarranted deportation threat following his arrest during anti-Trump protests.
On the chaotic streets of Atlanta, Georgia, during the "No Kings" protests, journalist Mario Guevara was conducting a live Spanish broadcast on social media, capturing the largest popular uprising since Donald Trump's second stint in the White House. However, the proverbial twist came when officers moved in and snared him.
"Gimme a minute... I ain't did nothing wrong," Guevara cried out to the officers in English, submitting peacefully as the arrest went live on his bustling Facebook channel, which boasts an impressive 783,000 subscribers. As he was apprehended, protesters nearby could be heard chanting, "Abolish ICE!"— an organization that Guevara later found himself entangled with.
Clad in a press vest and protective helmet, Guevara was carrying out his journalistic duty, documenting the protest. Yet, instead of lauding his valiant effort, he was handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and now faces potential deportation.
Following the arrest, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) issued a firmly worded statement, observing that Guevara's detainment "sends shivers down the spines of journalists worldwide." Expressing grave concern, the CPJ alleged that Guevara wasn't interfering with police work but diligently documenting the protest.
After a hearing on Monday, a judge granted Guevara's release on bail. Nevertheless, ICE allegedly issued a detainer, holding him in detention pending his removal from the U.S. In response, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, an organization that champions independent reporters, voiced their dismay, stating, "There's no rationale for deporting a journalist who's been legally permitted to work in the U.S. for years."
With Trump's reinstatement, efforts to rid the country of so-called "illegal" immigrants have intensified, including the deportation of individuals to El Salvador, where some are housed in maximum-security prisons. To the dismay of many, ICE did not comment on the situation when reached out to by AFP.
