LA's Protests and the Deployment of National Guard

Anti-Trump Demonstrations Gain Momentum Across Additional American Urban Centers

Currently, hundreds of Marine infantrymen from the US Army are being trained for deployment in Los Angeles, sparking controversy due to their unwanted presence. Simultaneously, protests against the Trump administration's actions are escalating in other major US cities.

While Donald Trump has threatened protesters with "very tough action," the situation in Los Angeles has largely remained peaceful. On Wednesday night, demonstrations in the West Coast metropolis were kept under control thanks to a nighttime curfew imposed by Mayor Karen Bass. However, the threat of further deployment of soldiers trained for overseas combat operations looms large.

Tip The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the military from engaging in domestic law enforcement, but there are exceptions. President Trump is justifying the troops' deployment under a provision of federal law meant to quell domestic unrest.

In a surprising move, approximately 700 Marine infantrymen, typically deployed for military operations and war, are currently undergoing a two-day training course for deployment in protests and handling crowds in a civilian environment. At least 2,000 National Guard soldiers are already on duty, with another 2,000 set to join by Thursday afternoon. These soldiers are protecting federal buildings and ICE agents during raids against migrants without valid residence permits.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has vocalized his opposition to the deployment, calling it "unlawful." Legal challenges are underway to halt the deployment, with high-ranking military officials and legal scholars arguing that it reflects authoritarian tendencies and may be unconstitutional. Despite these objections, the deployment continues, with further court decisions pending.

Meanwhile, protests against Trump's administration's policies have been growing in various US cities. Last Tuesday, thousands gathered in New York and Chicago, while further protests are planned in New York, Seattle, Las Vegas, San Antonio, and Washington, D.C.

The Commission, amidst the escalating protests in various US cities, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, given the increased use of force by law enforcement during war-and-conflicts-related situations. Simultaneously, politics surrounding the deployment of National Guard soldiers, including those trained for overseas combat operations, have become a major point of general news discussion due to the ongoing controversies and legal challenges over their constitutionality.
