Anti-Semitism under attack: Merz vows battle

In a poignant ceremony in Munich, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz attended the reopening of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue, 87 years after its destruction by the Nazis. The restoration of the synagogue is a testament to the resilience of the Jewish community in Germany and a significant event in the country's history.

Chancellor Merz, who grew up with 'Never Again' as a mission, expressed deep emotion during the ceremony. He remembered the inhumane crimes committed by the Nazis against the Jews and expressed horror at the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Germany.

The initiative to restore the Reichenbachstraße synagogue was taken by Munich literary scholar Rachel Salamander, a member of the Synagoge Reichenbachstraße association. Chancellor Merz thanked her for her efforts during the reopening ceremony, stating that her work signifies a step towards reconciliation and unity in Germany.

In a powerful speech, Merz declared war on any form of anti-Semitism, old or new, in Germany. His declaration was made on behalf of the entire federal government of the Federal Republic of Germany. As a German, Merz expressed shame at the resurgence of anti-Semitism, and as Chancellor, he vowed to combat it with all his might.

Merz also expressed a wish for Jews in Germany to live without police protection. He emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and security of the Jewish community, and called for a society that embraces diversity and tolerance.

The restoration of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue is a powerful symbol of hope and resilience. It serves as a reminder of the dark past and a beacon of a brighter, more inclusive future for Germany. As Merz stated, 'Never Again' is not just a slogan, but a duty we must all uphold.
