Anti-Semitism faces a new battle, as Merz announces a campaign against it

In a poignant and emotional speech during the reopening of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue in Munich, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his deep concern over the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Germany. The synagogue, extensively restored nearly 87 years after its devastation by the Nazis, serves as a symbol against the resurgence of this hateful ideology.

Merz, in the name of the entire federal government of the Federal Republic of Germany, declared war on all forms of anti-Semitism, old and new. He stated that the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Germany shames him not only as Chancellor, but also as a member of the post-war generation and as a German.

The initiative to restore the Reichenbachstraße Synagogue was taken by literature scholar Rachel Salamander, and the synagogue was reopened after several years of renovation with a large ceremony attended by Chancellor Merz. The reopening of the synagogue underscores the importance of preserving historical sites of religious and cultural significance.

Merz recalled the inhumane crimes committed by the Nazis against the Jews and expressed a desire for Jewish life in Germany to be possible without police protection. He emphasised that the restoration of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue is a testament to the resilience of the Jewish community in Germany and marked a significant step in the restoration of Jewish life in the country.

The reopening of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue was a powerful reminder of the promise 'Never Again', a mission, a duty that Merz grew up with. He expressed deep emotion during the ceremony, stating that the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Germany shames him as a child who was raised to uphold this promise.

Merz's declaration was made in the context of the reopening of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue and represents a strong commitment from the federal government to combat anti-Semitism and promote religious and cultural diversity in Germany.
