In a significant moment for Germany, the Reichenbachstraße synagogue in Munich was recently reopened, marking its restoration after being destroyed by the Nazis 87 years ago. The event was not just a religious milestone, but also a symbolic resistance against anti-Semitism.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was present at the reopening, expressing deep emotion during the occasion. He declared war on any form of anti-Semitism, old or new, in Germany, on behalf of the federal government of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Merz, who identified himself as a child of the post-war generation, grew up with 'Never Again' as a mission, duty, and promise. He spoke about the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Germany during his speech, expressing his horror at its return.

The reopening served as a reminder of the inhumane crimes committed by the Nazis against the Jews. Merz also remembered these atrocities in his speech, emphasising the importance of combating anti-Semitism to ensure such horrors never repeat.

Rachel Salamander, a bookseller and founder of the "Synagoge Reichenbach" association, played a central role in the synagogue's preservation and reopening. She dedicated over 14 years to rescuing and restoring the synagogue, one of the few Bauhaus synagogues worldwide. Salamander is a member of the Synagoge Reichenbachstraße association and her efforts have made the restoration a testament to the resilience of the Jewish community in Germany.

The Reichenbachstraße synagogue, now fully restored, will serve as a functioning place of worship and cultural venue. The reopening highlights the ongoing efforts to combat anti-Semitism in Germany, a fight that Merz vowed to continue.

Merz expressed a desire for the lives of Jews in Germany to be able to unfold without police protection, a testament to his commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive society for all. The reopening of the Reichenbachstraße synagogue is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
