Maccabi Cologne discusses alleged antisemitic disturbances targeting team members - Anti-Semitic Incidents Reported Against Makkabi Cologne Athletes
Last Sunday, a football match between TFG Nippes 78 II and TuS Makkabi Cologne in Cologne was marked by "massive anti-Semitic and violent incidents," according to reports from various sources, including DPA, "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung," and "Kölnische Rundschau."
During the game, Makkabi players alleged they were "viciously insulted." Two players were reportedly spat at, and others were physically attacked after the game, with accounts of being choked, beaten, and pulled by the hair.
Cengiz Kirat, the football department head of Nippes 78, denied the allegations of anti-Semitic incidents and physical attacks. He stated that nothing unusual was reported during the game. However, Makkabi Germany has stated that anti-Semitic attacks on their clubs, including Makkabi Cologne, have increased in quantity and quality.
Makkabi Cologne has filed a complaint with the Cologne Public Prosecutor's Office, and the sports court of the Mittelrhein association and the NRW anti-Semitism commissioner, Sylvia Löhrmann, have been informed.
In a statement on Instagram, the Nippes 78 II team referred to "provocations" and "racism" allegedly by Makkabi players. Contrarily, the club accused of antisemitic and violent incidents against Makkabi Cologne players, but apparently not involved in the attacks itself, is TFG Nippes 78 II.
Interestingly, the club claims to have heard nothing about insults during or after the game. Makkabi, on the other hand, demands "severe consequences" for the incidents, and criminal investigations are ongoing.
The situation remains under investigation, and it is hoped that the authorities will take appropriate action to address the reported incidents and ensure the safety and respect for all players involved in future matches.
