In an unprecedented escalation at the Poland-Belarus border on July 15, migrants were reported to have launched a Molotov cocktail and thrown stones at Polish border guards and soldiers from the Belarusian side, in an attempt to illegally cross the border. The incident, captured on video and reported by various Polish media sources, has been met with strong reactions from the Polish government.

Polish Interior and Administration Minister Tomasz Siemoniak declared that Poland takes the incident "extremely seriously", stressing that such attacks could not occur without the "knowledge or consent of Belarusian security services". Warsaw has lodged formal protests with Belarus, with Polish officials emphasizing that Belarus bears responsibility for events occurring from its side of the border. The attack is viewed as a deliberate provocation aimed at inflaming tensions between the two countries.

The Polish Border Guard has already expressed a strong protest at the level of commissioners, and further measures are being discussed. Despite the attack, Polish authorities have reassured that the border remains secure. Patrols have been reinforced, and 11,000 officers and soldiers are on constant alert to manage the situation. The response also includes readiness for additional police support if needed.

The incident appears part of a broader context of escalating migration pressure and tension on the border. Migrants have been escalating aggressive attempts to cross into Poland from Belarus, including earlier incidents of migrants breaking holes under the fence and attacking border guards with stones.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski discussed the incident with Minister Siemoniak, while Polish authorities maintain a heightened security posture on the border to prevent further escalations. It is important to note that the forces at the Belarus border remain the same, and no border violations have been confirmed.

Police officers in Bialystok are ready to deploy to the border if necessary, as the Polish government continues to monitor the situation closely. The Polish government remains resolute in its stance against Belarus, promising to protest resolutely against any actions that threaten the security and integrity of the Polish border.
