Anti-Israeli, American assault demonstration led by Huthi group in Yemen
Headline: Fireworks over the Al-Massirah Canal: Israel and Yemen's Houthi Rebels Go Head-to-Head
Yemen's Houthi rebels are slinging mud and shouting insults across the Al-Massirah Canal, accusing Israel of "American-Israeli aggression" following a series of attacks on Hodeida Port and Bajil district, both under Houthi control.
Israel, ever the smooth talker, has openly acknowledged these assaults, marking the first time they've targeted Yemen since reigniting their offense in Gaza on March 18. Since this resumption, the Houthis have been like a bunch of angry bees, sending missiles buzzing towards Israeli territory – all intercepted, except for one on Sunday that left six innocent civilians nursing injuries.
On the day in question, the Houthis proudly claimed responsibility for sinking a ballistic missile into Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. In a statement dripping with bravado, the Houthis bragged about hitting the airport with a hypersonic missile, a claim that initially left Israeli authorities scratching their heads. After all, they'd only reported impacts near the airport—nothing about a missile fired from Yemen.
But, in the same breath, the Houthis dropped another bomb—or rather, a drone—squarely in the backyard of Ashkelon, a city in southern Israel.
Ever since the flare-up in Gaza, ignited by an unprecedented attack by Islamic Hamas on October 7, 2023, the Houthis have been shoulder-to-shoulder with their fellow rebels, launching attacks on Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. They've even taken to targeting ships they suspect of having ties to Israel in the Red Sea, a bustling hub for global maritime traffic.
This new round of fighting has regional players on the edge of their seats. Iran, not one to shy away from a confrontation, has accused Israel of trying to drag the US into a catastrophe in the region.
Noteworthy Facts:- Missile Strikes: Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel, with most being intercepted or missing their mark. However, a rare direct hit on a Tel Aviv apartment in July 2024 resulted in one fatality and several injuries.- Counterstrikes: Israel’s Air Force has hit key Houthi-held sites, including Hodeidah Port, a crucial facility for the transfer of Iranian arms to the Houthis, and Sanaa Airport, Yemen’s primary air transport hub.- US Involvement: In March–May 2025, the US launched a major campaign of air and naval strikes on Houthi targets, codenamed Operation Rough Rider, with the aim of degrading Houthi military capabilities.- Ceasefire Status: Israel has declared it's not bound by the US-Houthi ceasefire deal, leaving the door open for continued military action against the Houthis.
