Anti-Immigration March Led by Polish Nationalists Holds Place Prior to Elections

In the heart of Europe, Poland is gearing up for its presidential election on May 18, and immigration stands as a heated topic of debate. Nationwide protests, adorned with the red and white national flag, have become a common sight, echoing chants against immigration.

The issue of immigration is a major focus for Poland as they cater to roughly a million refugees from Ukraine, their neighboring nation embroiled in ongoing strife. However, Poland alleges that Russia and Belarus intentionally orchestrate a surge of immigration into the European Union (EU) to create chaos.

The protest participants, led by the nationalist opposition, marched towards the government hub in Warsaw, praising the name of presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki. An advocate for US President Donald Trump and backed by the right-wing opposition Law and Justice party, as well as outgoing President Andrzej Duda, Nawrocki is currently polling second in the presidential race with around 25 percent support.

Rafal Trzaskowski, Warsaw's pro-European Union Mayor and the frontrunner, enjoys the support of Tusk's Civic Coalition, polling at 32 percent. Trzaskowski continues to advocate for a supportive approach towards Ukrainian refugees.

Amid this political landscape, some perspectives lean towards an anti-Ukrainian sentiment, raising concerns among economists. Despite initial warm welcomes for Ukrainian refugees, recent sentiments among the Polish population have grown less hospitable. France 24 reports that, while politicians capitalize on anti-Ukrainian sentiments, the presence of migrant families has actually fueled economic growth within Poland.

Looking forward, Poland's approach to immigration will likely remain a defining aspect of the upcoming election. The country has rolled out new immigration policies and revisions to existing regulations, focusing on controlling the number, purpose, and countries of origin for foreign nationals seeking to work or live in Poland. These changes aim to strike a balance between protecting national security and fostering a welcoming climate for legitimate immigrants.
