The police in Saxony-Anhalt, a German state, are on a roll as they join forces with other law enforcement agencies in a nationwide crackdown on hate speech and extremist activity online. Today, they'll be executing a dozen measures against suspected culprits, according to the State Criminal Police Office in Magdeburg. These measures primarily involve interrogations for incitement, insults, and the use of unconstitutional symbols, with a significant focus on right-wing extremism.
This nationwide operation, called the 12th Action Day Against Hate Posts, involves over 170 police operations across all German federal states. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) takes the lead, executing about 180 police actions related to over 140 investigations.
In Saxony-Anhalt, raids against hate and incitement on the internet have been underway since the break of dawn, targeting primarily right-wing offenders. But don't think you're safe if you're on the left, religiously affiliated, extremist, or just plain rude – authorities won't hesitate to pursue cases across the political and ideological spectrum.
Authorities acknowledge the rising tide of criminal hate speech online, reporting a quadrupling of such cases since 2021. They're urging the public to join the fight by reporting hate posts to social media providers and asking for the removal of criminal content. Additionally, citizens can file a police report through the eRevier online.
Hesse and Brandenburg are among the states already taking action. In Hesse, 12 individuals face charges for inciting hatred, while Brandenburg focuses on eliminating Nazi symbols and political insults. North Rhine-Westphalia mounted coordinated raids in cities like Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and Cologne, questioning 14 suspects and executing two search warrants.
