Discussing Cultural Budget Cuts with Future Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson

Opponent in Cultural Position Advocates Against Additional Reductions - Anti-fur Senate Appointee Wedl-Wilson Stands Firm Against Proposed Severance of Cultural Funding

Get ready for a chat with Berlin's new culture senator-to-be, Sarah Wedl-Wilson, who's standing firm against further deep cuts in the cultural budget. The 130 million euros slashed this year was bearable, according to her, as many reserves were eliminated. But more hurts, she stressed on Radio3 RBB, "We can't do it, we can't rip this much from culture in Berlin."

So, it's a "Bloody tough job" to work together with every cultural creative in Berlin to prove the significance of the city's artistic scene for its people and society. Academy Award-winner Wedl-Wilson recognizes the value of culture, saying, "C'mon, y'all, we need to show just how important our creative scene is, and what worth it holds for the city and its people."

The plan is to initiate what she calls a "Cultural dialogue" between the Senate and institutions. This dialogue aims to figure out what can change, improve, or be optimized so that it's the art that takes the littlest hit.

Some ideas on the table include joint depositories, shared logistics for theaters, combined box offices, consolidated payroll accounting, and renting out spaces for events to generate extra income.

Straight up, it's not about privatization, she clarifies, "So layoff the privatization talk. It's not about selling out our cultural institutions to the highest bidder." Rather, it's about rethinking the structures in which these cultural institutions will operate in the present "emergency situation".

Wage flight and job cuts aren't on the table, she assures. Instead, it's about fostering a networked approach among institutions, be it loosely connected or merged. They're even discussing the possibility of setting up a foundation in the long run, like the opera foundation, which has proven to be a successful model.

On Monday, the governing mayor Kai Wegner of the CDU formally presented Wedl-Wilson as Berlin's new culture senator. She's scheduled to be sworn in on 22 May in the House of Representatives, replacing Joe Chialo of the CDU, who stepped down last Friday.

Reducing Impact of Budget Cuts

To minimize the impact on cultural institutions and creators, Sarah Wedl-Wilson could consider the following strategies:

  1. Engaging with Stakeholders: Encourage open dialogue with cultural creators and institutions to identify less impactful areas for cuts.
  2. Alternative Funding Models: Explore public-private partnerships, crowdfunding, or increasing private donations to reduce dependence on government funding.
  3. Optimizing Operations: Improve efficiency, share resources, and reduce duplication of efforts among institutions.
  4. Cost-Effective Programs: Implement innovative programs and support emerging artists with low-cost resources.
  5. Advocating for Cultural Value: Actively lobby for the cultural sector's economic and social worth to policymakers to secure favorable funding decisions in the future.
  6. Senator-to-be Sarah Wedl-Wilson should engage in discussion with cultural creators and institutions in Berlin to identify areas of decrease in funding that will have less impact.
  7. To decrease the reliance on government funding, Wedl-Wilson could explore options for public-private partnerships, crowdfunding, or increasing private donations.
  8. Efficiency improvements, sharing resources, and reducing duplication of efforts among cultural institutions could be implemented to optimize their operations.
  9. Innovative programs that support emerging artists with low-cost resources could be implemented to reduce the impact on cultural institutions.
  10. Wedl-Wilson should actively advocate for the economic and social value of the cultural sector to policymakers to secure beneficial funding decisions in the future.
