The Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency (FADA) has seen a considerable surge in inquiries from individuals who've experienced discrimination since 2019, with last year's total exceeding double that of 2019. This alarming trend is highlighted in the annual report by Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Ferda Ataman, presented in Berlin last Tuesday.

Highlighting the growing issue of discrimination in the country, Ataman expressed concerns about its increasing brazenness. The report revealed a staggering 11,405 inquiries made to FADA last year, compared to 4,247 in 2019—a year before the pandemic. It's important to note that a high dark figure is presumed, given that most victims tend to keep discrimination incidents to themselves. Studies indicate every third person in Germany has already wrestled with discrimination under the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG), with the majority being women.

Racist discrimination accounted for 43% of the inquiries, with an over three-fold increase since 2019. Some 27% of inquiries were related to disadvantages stemming from disability or chronic illness, while gender-based inquiries made up 24%, including sexual harassment cases. Age-related discrimination stole the spotlight with 12%, followed by religion-based discrimination at 7%, and discrimination based on sexual identity at 4%.
