Anthony Richardson's shocking pinkie injury during the Colts QB competition with Daniel Jones takes the spotlight
The Indianapolis Colts experienced a setback in their preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on August 7, 2025, as second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson dislocated his right pinkie finger during the second possession of the game.
Richardson was sacked by Ravens linebacker David Ojabo, causing his finger to bend at an awkward angle. He immediately left the game and did not return to play. The Colts reported that Richardson's finger was popped back into place by trainers, and the injury is not considered serious.
Despite the injury, Richardson's recovery is progressing well. By August 12, 2025, he reported that his pinkie was "feeling better every day" and had not hindered his ability to practice. The Colts plan for Richardson to enter the next preseason game against the Packers as a substitute and play more than the two series allocated to starting quarterback Daniel Jones.
The Colts have also restocked their roster to compensate for any potential disruptions. They signed cornerback B.J. Mayes, running backs Nate Noel and Nay'Quan Wright, and tackle Marcellus Johnson during the offseason.
Richardson, who was drafted fourth overall in the 2022 NFL draft, has played in only 16 of 34 games due to a series of injuries. He has completed 47.7 percent of his throws, the lowest percentage among regular starters. Daniel Jones, who signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts during the offseason, has been added to compete for the starting job.
Jones' increased playing time in the game against Green Bay could potentially impact his chances of becoming the starting quarterback for the Colts. Coach Shane Steichen may consider changing his script for next Saturday's game against Green Bay, originally planned for Jones to start and take more snaps than Richardson.
Coach Steichen stated that Richardson's injury has not affected his development and progress in the NFL. Richardson's brief performance in the game did not help him reclaim the starting job in Indianapolis over incoming free-agent acquisition, Daniel Jones.
The Colts designated linebacker Liam Anderson as waived-injured and released cornerback Tre Herndon, an eighth-year player who signed with Indianapolis on July 31. The team continues to prepare for the upcoming season with a roster that is both talented and resilient.
