Anthony Gordon's split season: Champions League star but Premier League struggle

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has delivered a standout season in Europe but struggled domestically. The £4.7m-rated midfielder ranks eighth in his position with 181 points, yet his Premier League form tells a different story. While he has excelled in the Champions League, his league performances have fallen short of expectations.

Gordon's Champions League campaign has been impressive. In just seven appearances, he has scored six goals and provided three assists, earning 72 points. His eight goal involvements—six goals and two assists—make him Newcastle's top contributor in the competition. This sharp contrast with his Premier League record highlights his European impact.

In the league, however, his numbers drop significantly. With no goals from open play in over a year, his only two league goals this season came from penalties in December. He has also registered three assists, all in the same month. His 71 Premier League points, averaging 3.9 per appearance, reflect a less consistent domestic performance.

His playing time has also been limited. Gordon is frequently substituted between the 55th and 70th minutes in league matches. If Newcastle advances directly to the Champions League round of 16, his Premier League minutes could decrease further from late February.

Despite his mixed form, Gordon remains a key asset. He sits just eight points behind fifth-placed Enzo Fernandez (£4.5m) and 21 points off leader Dominik Szoboszlai (£4.9m). With Newcastle facing a 2-0 deficit against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals and an FA Cup clash against Aston Villa, his contributions will be crucial in the coming weeks.

Gordon's season has been defined by a stark split between European success and domestic struggles. His Champions League performances have kept him among the top midfielders, but his lack of open-play goals in the league remains a concern. As Newcastle navigates multiple competitions, his role will be closely watched in the weeks ahead.
