Annual Event Honors LGBTQ+ Community at Badgerland Pride Softball Classic

The Badgerland Pride Softball Classic, a significant event in the LGBTQ+ sports calendar, recently commenced at McGaw Park in Madison, Wisconsin. Established 20 years ago, the league provides a welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals to engage in softball, fostering a strong sense of community and inclusivity.

The league, which hosts several events throughout the year, including the Badgerland Classic Tournament, celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. The tournament, a highlight of their calendar, typically attracts teams from various divisions. This year, the tournament features twenty teams from the Midwest, with many players returning year after year to connect with fellow softball enthusiasts.

The league is divided into different divisions to accommodate players of various skill levels and interests. The FMS Spirit Award will be given to one team for outstanding team spirit, in memory of Felicia Melton Smyth, a local AIDS advocate.

Nick Oswald, a player from the Des Moines Fury, expressed his appreciation for the tournament's environment and hospitality. He mentioned that he has made numerous friends at the tournament and considers it a supportive community. Bill Bronec, a tournament softball player from Milwaukee, emphasized the importance of human-to-human connections in the tournament.

The championship title will be awarded to one team on Sunday, marking the final day of the tournament. The tournament provides an opportunity for players to express their pride and offers an inclusive environment for the participants. The Badgerland Pride Softball Classic continues to serve as a platform for acceptance and love among its participants.

In addition to the tournament, the league hosts regular season games and other events, such as the E division games at Duane F Bowman Park and recreational league games at Olbrich Park. The upcoming Badgerland Classic Tournament for 2025 is scheduled from July 4th to July 6th at McGaw Park in Fitchburg, WI.
