Annual decline in Danish immigration from India continuous for third consecutive term

Migration rates from India to Denmark and Sweden have been on a disappointing slide for the third year in a row, as per the latest stats from Statistics Denmark and Statistics Sweden.

In 2024, only 2,890 Indian citizens migrated to Denmark, with 1,654 leaving the country, resulting in a net migration of just 1,236 people - the lowest number since the pandemic era. The decrease in Indian citizens moving to Sweden has also followed a similar trajectory, with only 5,800 Indians relocating in 2024 compared to 8,100 in 2022.

Why the sudden dip? Factors like policy shifts in host countries, increased competition from regional alternatives, economic opportunities, or even return migration may be playing a role. More restrictive immigration policies, reduced labor demand in key sectors, or enticing labor markets in neighboring countries may be influencing the migration slowdown, although no direct evidence was found to support these assumptions.

Despite the downward trend, Indians continue to lead the pack when it comes to receiving Danish work permits. Approximately 70% more work permits were granted to Indians than to Chinese citizens, the second most common recipients, and nearly three times as many as were awarded to British citizens. Indians migrating to Denmark are primarily high-skilled workers, with most coming on a work permit, and fewer opting for study permits.

Interestingly, even though India's constitution does not allow for dual citizenship, 300 Indian citizens exchanged their Indian citizenship for Danish citizenship in 2024, marking a substantial increase from the previous years. While the reasons behind this decision remain unclear, it could be a result of improved opportunities, better quality of life, or simply the desire for a change of pace.

However, a conclusive explanation for the falling migration rates from India to Scandinavia would require updated bilateral migration reports or labor market analyses focusing specifically on Indian citizens in these regions.
