The Goodreads Choice Awards, an annual event celebrating the best books of the year, marked its 15th edition in 2023. This prestigious programme, which began in 2009, has been a beacon for literary enthusiasts, recognising outstanding works across various genres.

In the realm of fantasy, Leigh Bardugo's "Hell Bent" clinched the Best Fantasy category, while R.F. Kuang's "Yellowface" triumphed in the Best Fiction category. The historical fiction genre witnessed a double triumph with Emilia Hart's "Weyward", which secured the top spot in this year's awards.

Matthew Desmond's "Poverty, by America" is a timeless exploration advocating for a bold new agenda of shared prosperity. This insightful work did not compete in the awards but is undeniably a significant contribution to the literary world.

Rebecca Ross' "Divine Rivals" has become a colossal sensation on BookTok, offering a refreshingly new fantasy realm. The second installment of this series is set to release on December 26.

The Best Mystery & Thriller category was won by Freida McFadden's "The Housemaid's Secret", a gripping tale that kept readers on the edge of their seats. In the Best Romance category, Emily Henry's "Happy Place" triumphed, while Rebecca Yarros' "Fourth Wing" claimed victory in the Best Romantasy category.

Stephen King's latest book, "Holly", returned to the Horror category with a chilling narrative. "Holly" features private investigator Holly Gibney in a confrontation with a pair of uniquely depraved antagonists. The book seamlessly blends elements of character study, thriller, and a cautionary tale.

Ali Hazelwood's "Check & Mate" successfully plunges into the young adult genre, following the journey of Mallory Greenleaf, a reluctant chess genius. Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman in Me" garnered acclaim from both her fan base and critics.

T.J. Klune's "In the Lives of Puppets" secured the Best Science Fiction category, a testament to the author's imaginative storytelling. Stephen King also won the Best Horror category with "Holly", making it a double victory for the renowned author.

The Goodreads Choice Awards continue to shine a spotlight on exceptional literature, providing readers with a guide to the most captivating books of the year. As we eagerly await the next edition, we can look back on 2023 with a sense of literary fulfilment.
