Winning the SGM New Talent Award: A Thrilling Victory for Niclas Weber

Once more, SGM Germany sought out a promising young lighting designer. In a nail-biting finale in Cologne, Niclas Weber emerged victorious against his two fellow contestants. Not only did he shine in the spotlight, but he also took home prizes totaling over €6,500.

A Tough Call for the Judges

The elite jury wrestled with their decisions, as the contestants' showcase quality was exceptionally high. SGM Germany's Managing Director, Michael Herweg, was exhilarated: "The entries blew us away with their high quality, and the finalists raised the bar even higher. Selecting the winners wasn't easy for me and my panel, Sarah Clausen (High End Systems / ETC), Jerry Appelt, Tom Becker (Die Referenz), and Lars Wernlund (Capture). In the end, minute differences made all the difference." In the end, the coveted title went to Niclas Weber, a 20-year-old from Essen, Germany, pushing Max Schmalenberger and Martin Tasch into second and third place respectively.

A Stepping Stone into the Industry

As a trainee event technician, Niclas currently hones his skills in lighting design for concerts and events in the Weststadthalle in Essen. "Winning the SGM New Talent Award is a dream come true for me this year. Participating in such a prestigious event and facing off against my talented peers was a truly exhilarating experience. Being given access to such a grand and sophisticated lighting setup was the icing on the cake. I'm already eagerly anticipating next year's award," shared an excited Niclas Weber.

Second-placed Max Schmalenberger was equally thrilled: "The SGM New Talent Award offers an unparalleled opportunity for young lighting enthusiasts to flex their creative muscles when it comes to lighting concepts. Aptitude, dedication, and a willingness to learn are all you need to make the most of this platform. Even novices can showcase their talent and shouldn't hesitate to participate in the SGM New Talent Award."

This year, the SGM New Talents Award had the backing of Capture and, for the first time, High End Systems / Hog 4. The award will undoubtedly return in 2020.
