Commemorative Event in Solingen Marks First Anniversary of Tragic Attack

On Saturday, August 23rd, the city of Solingen, Germany, will host a commemorative event at the Fronhof in the city center. The event, co-organized by the City of Solingen and the Evangelical City Church, aims to provide support and strength to each other by looking back at the past and forward to the future.

The tragic attack on August 23rd, 2020, claimed three lives and injured ten others, and has left a lasting impact on the community. The event is intended to send a signal of courage and unity at the moment of remembrance, and to reflect on societal issues related to terrorism and migration.

Notable guest speakers for the commemorative event include Mona Neubaur, Deputy Minister-President of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of NRW, Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal and European Affairs, International and Media of the State of NRW, Dr. Barbara Haliza, Commissioner for Victim Protection of the State of NRW, Josefine Paul, Minister for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration of the State of NRW, and Herbert Reul, Minister of the Interior of the State of NRW. Roland Weber, Federal Commissioner for Victims, is also confirmed to attend.

After speeches by Mayor Tim Kurzbach and Minister-President Hendrik Wüst, Superintendents Dr. Ilka Werner will invite a spiritual reflection. The Bergische Symphonikers will provide musical accompaniment for the event.

Mayor Tim Kurzbach has expressed a wish for the community to stand together on the first anniversary, and has stated that the city has shown unity and intends to maintain it for the future. The event is a reminder of the importance of solidarity and resilience in the face of adversity.

The commemorative event connects to broader issues in Germany around right-wing terrorism and social tensions. The perpetrator of the Solingen attack was a Syrian man accused of acting on behalf of the Islamic State, which has intensified public dialogue on migration and security policies in Germany.

The event is a significant moment in German history, reflecting ongoing social and political discussions on migration and national security. It serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering the past, and working together to build a better future.
