The New York City Police Department found her "unconscious and unresponsive" in her Brooklyn home at approximately 7:50 a.m., and Emergency Medical Services pronounced her deceased at the scene.
The initial 911 call indicated she had experienced "cardiac arrest." However, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed that her death was a suicide, caused by "acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine."
Diphenhydramine and cetirizine are antihistamines commonly used to treat allergy symptoms. Ethanol is the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, and its presence indicates consumption. Amphetamine is a stimulant often prescribed to treat conditions like ADHD. The combination of these substances, particularly mixing amphetamines with alcohol, can lead to severe toxic effects, which contributed to Anne Burrell’s fatal overdose.
