In a remarkable turn of events, the latest entry in the Demon Slayer anime film series, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -- Infinity Castle: Part 1, has taken the number one spot in the North American box office this weekend. The film debuted with an impressive $70 million, surpassing the previous anime opening record-holder, the original 1999 Pokémon.

Produced by the studio Ufotable, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -- Infinity Castle: Part 1 is a part of Crunchyroll's Demon Slayer anime film series. The film continues the story of teen fighter Tanjiro Kamado as he tries to save his demon-transformed sister.

Meanwhile, in a different genre, The Conjuring: Last Rites, featuring Ed and Lorraine Warren battling a demon in a family's home, fell to second place with a weekend gross of $26.1 million. The Warner Bros. offering, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, had a monster debut last weekend of $84 million.

The film Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the third feature film in the Downton Abbey universe, debuted in third place with $18.1 million. This aristocratic setting film features an ensemble cast including Hugh Bonneville and the late Dame Maggie Smith.

Lionsgate's The Long Walk, an adaptation of the 1979 Stephen King novel, debuted in fourth place. In this dystopian horror story, young men must keep walking or be shot and killed in an annual competition. The film stars Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson.

Interestingly, Disney's Toy Story was re-released for its 30th anniversary and took in $3.5 million. The film has already become Japan's third-highest grossing film of all time.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -- Infinity Castle: Part 1 is the first title in a new trilogy. As the anime film series continues to captivate audiences worldwide, fans eagerly await the next instalment.
