Anime adaptation announced for Hiromu Arakawa's Daemons of the Shadow Realm
In an exciting turn of events, Crunchyroll revealed during their Anime Expo 2025 panel on July 5 that they will be streaming the upcoming anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's Daemons of the Shadow Realm. This highly-anticipated project is being produced by Studio Bones Film, a new studio under Bones, known for delivering high-quality work.
At the helm of this production, we find key staff members including Masahiro Andō (Sword of the Stranger) as director, Noboru Takagi (Kingdom, Golden Kamuy) overseeing series scripts, Nobuhiro Arai (Bungo Stray Dogs) handling character design, and Kenichiro Suehiro (Golden Kamuy, Re:ZERO) composing music.
The anime will follow the story of twins Yuru and Asa, who live in an isolated mountain village with mysterious secrets and a prophecy tied to them. The manga, first released in December 2021, has already published nine volumes, with the tenth volume scheduled for July 2025.
Crunchyroll has confirmed that they will be digitally distributing the anime on their platform, but an official release date has yet to be announced. This adaptation marks Arakawa's return to fantasy and adventure following her previous work Silver Spoon, with thematic and stylistic ties echoing her earlier hit Fullmetal Alchemist.
In Daemons, certain humans have the ability to control supernatural Daemons, and the story centres around Yuru and Asa, who are fated to learn how to control all Daemons in order to save the world. As they make their way back to each other, they will uncover the secrets of their village and the prophecy that binds them.
