In the world of anime, two titans continue to rule the Japanese box office and captivate audiences worldwide.

"Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle" has been Japan's number one movie for three consecutive weeks, closing in on "Howl's Moving Castle", which grossed 19.6 billion yen and is at number nine on Japan's all-time box office ranking. With 17.63 billion yen grossed, "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle" is currently at number 10. The US and UK are eagerly awaiting the release of the film on September 12.

Meanwhile, the beloved anime series "Made in Abyss" is not resting on its laurels. A series of sequel films is in the works, marking the first of its kind according to the official website and Anime News Network. The first film, titled "Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery," is scheduled for release in 2026 in Japan, with a premiere event planned for February 8, 2026, at Nakano Zero Grand Hall in Tokyo.

The story follows a young orphan girl named Riko who aspires to become an Abyss explorer, AKA a Cave Raider, like her mother. In the caves, she encounters Reg, a robot/human hybrid. Riko, Reg, and their friends navigate the mysterious Abyss, a place filled with wonders and dangers.

Masayuki Kojima will return to direct the new animated film, with original voice cast members Miyu Tomita (Riko), Mariya Ise (Reg), and Shiori Izawa (Nanachi) reprising their roles. Misaki Kuno will also return as Faputa.

While a season 3 of the TV anime remains uncertain, the franchise is continuing the story through this new film series. This decision follows the franchise's previous pattern of expanding the story via movies between seasons rather than TV episodes.

The first season of the anime series "Made in Abyss" premiered in 2017, with season 2 arriving in 2022. Two compilation movies, both released in 2019, have also been part of the series.

As these two anime continue to captivate audiences, it's clear that the future of Japanese animation is in good hands.
