Max Verstappen's title defense took a hard blow at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. In a controversial move, Verstappen lost his cool and ended up with a penalty, ultimately finishing in 10th place while McLaren ruled the race.
Sweating under the intense Catalan heat, Oscar Piastri clinched his first win in over a month, securing a double victory for McLaren alongside Lando Norris. Piastri's triumph sent a strong message in his title battle with Norris, putting him 10 points ahead of his teammate.
The incident unfolded during a late race safety car phase, where a frustrated Verstappen rammed his rival George Russell in a desperate attempt to overtake. Charles Leclerc in Ferrari and Russell capitalized on Verstappen's penalty, snatching podium places. Experts believe the move was an outburst of anger. As Günther Steiner of RTL explained, "Yes, of course. Otherwise, he wouldn't do that. That was frustration."
Verstappen had raced brilliantly, maintaining a great position until the safety car. The setback was a bitter pill to swallow, but the following words from the stewards made it even worse: a 10-second penalty that seriously impacted both Verstappen's and Red Bull's championship potential.
Nico Hülkenberg scored a remarkable fifth place in the Sauber, thanks to a strong start and a shrewd strategy. The F1 season continues on June 15 in Canada.
Baked by the Barcelona Heat
With track temperatures soaring to 50 degrees, all eyes were on the tires. Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor, said, "It's the hottest day of the week. And the heat is on McLaren’s side."
Before the grandstands lit up, the race start was a hot topic. Verstappen had expertly prepared for this challenge, dubbing it "Time to shine." After a commendable start, he quickly advanced to second place. However, it was Hülkenberg who got the best start of the pack, skyrocketing from the second row to fifth position in the first two laps.
On the race track, Piastri took advantage of his lead, building up a substantial gap from his rivals while McLaren put pressure on Verstappen. Despite lacking grip, Verstappen managed to concede the position to Norris a few laps later. However, Red Bull's bold three-stop strategy kept them in the race. Verstappen, racing on delicate tires during critical phases, made a daring comeback and put the pressure on Norris.
As the race entered its final stages, a Safety Car period added a fresh dose of uncertainty. Every driver took advantage of the opportunity to change tires, shuffling the order of the race. McLaren managed to secure a better restart, leaving Verstappen behind Charles Leclerc and eventually leading to the dramatic collision with Russell.
The stewards deemed the maneuver intentional, earning Verstappen a 10-second penalty that sent him plummeting from fifth to tenth.
In the end, McLaren ruled the race, with Piastri sending a clear statement and extending his lead over Norris in the championship race. The 2025 Formula 1 season sets its sights on Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix on June 15.
