Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff's comment about Max Verstappen's driving style ignites a fury among Rome's taxi drivers. This controversial comparison fuels heated reactions in the heart of Italy.

The aftermath of the Spanish Grand Prix might have passed, but the controversy continues, this time in Rome, stirring up Rome's taxi drivers. It all started with Toto Wolff comparing Formula 1's world champion, Max Verstappen, to an aggressive taxi driver from Rome or Naples due to his reckless collision with George Russell on the Barcelona track. Wolff suggested that Verstappen drove like a taxi driver with "no rules" and "a lot of aggression" on the track, a statement that didn't sit well with Italy's taxi drivers.

President Loreno Bittarelli of Rome's largest taxi association took offense, telling "Corriere della Sera," "We are better than Formula 1 drivers who wouldn't even survive an hour in Rome's city traffic." He then described Rome as a "jungle, much worse than a Formula 1 racetrack." The taxi union Filt-Cgil echoed, "There is no aggressive driving here in Rome," and joked, "We drive as slow as Mercedes."

Rome vs. Formula 1: false Stereotypes

The unwarranted generalization didn't sit well with Rome's taxi drivers, who consider it a false stereotype. Wolff's comment sparked criticism from the taxi community for spreading misconceptions about their safe driving practices. Taxi drivers take pride in their ability to navigate the complex urban environment of Rome and avoid accidents that could disrupt their income. One driver stated, "We are the first ones who don't want to have accidents, otherwise we lose our working day."

A Clash of Giants: Max Verstappen's Reaction and Racing Woes

Wolff's comment, made during an interview on Italian television after the race, likely stemmed from frustration. Verstappen had been accused of escalating a conflict with Russell and ramming him to maintain his position on the track, resulting in a 10-second penalty and three penalty points. This clash was a significant setback for Verstappen, who was striving to close the gap between himself and the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who secured their third double win of the season in Barcelona. Verstappen initially retorted sarcastically when asked about Russell's criticism, saying, "I'll bring him some tissues next time." However, he did admit his mistake on Instagram, stating, "the impact was 'not right and shouldn't have happened.'" Christian Horner confirmed that Verstappen had apologized to Russell in the team debrief.
