Andreeva overcomes Bucsa, advances to French Open second round through extensive play.
Top-seeded Mirra Andreeva, hailing from Siberia, prevailed in her second-round match at the 2025 French Open, defeating 98th-ranked opponent Alexandra Bucsa in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The 18-year-old's victory was attributed to her consistent play and four broken serves.
Speaking after the match, Andreeva shared her approach to the contest, stating, "I tried not to dwell on last year's results. Starting a tournament is always difficult. Bucsa played well today, but I focused on fighting hard, staying consistent, and showing my best game, aiming to put as many balls in play as possible."
In damp and chilly conditions in Paris, Andreeva overcame a 3-0 deficit in the opening set. She struck a winning shot down the line to resuscitate her game during Bucsa's opening service game. Andreeva went on to win ten of the next twelve games, securing a 4-1 lead in the second set. She clinched victory with a total of 25 winners, compared to Bucsa's 16.
Next up for Andreeva is a third-round match against either American Ashlyn Krueger or Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands. Achieving her best performance to date on clay, Andreeva reached the quarterfinals in both Madrid and Rome, albeit losing both times to Coco Gauff. Reflecting on her experiences, she said, "While these two tournaments did not turn out as I had hoped, I find a lot of positives and valuable experience in them. Now, I will strive to give my best performance in every match at the French Open."
As a top-10 seed, this was Andreeva's first Grand Slam match in that position. With a 28-7 overall record and 8-3 on clay courts this season, she has shown excellent form, especially on clay surfaces. Her 65-16 record on clay courts over the last four years demonstrates her dominance on this surface. In the WTA singles race rankings, she ranks 3rd with 2,565 points after playing six tournaments. It is noteworthy that the earnings of players in her ranking range typically exceed the millions.

In a post-match interview, Andreeva spoke about her impending match against either Krueger or Lamens, expressing her intent to continue performing well, as she aims to conquer the clay courts of the French Open, just like she did in Madrid and Rome recently. Despite her losses to Coco Gauff in those tournaments, Andreeva looks forward to emulating Russian greats in the realm of tennis, spurred by the financial rewards and competitive spirit that the sport offers in a Grand Slam event like the French Open.
