Andrea Coscoran ends 12th in 1,500m final at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo: "It's a valuable lesson"

Niels Laros, the favourite in the 1,500m race, faced a disappointing outcome as he faded to fifth down the homestretch. On the other hand, Isaac Nader from Portugal clinched the gold medal with a thrilling last-minute surge, overtaking four competitors in the final 50m of the race. Nader's winning time was 3:34.10, just edging out silver medalist Jake Wightman from Great Britain by a margin of 0.02 seconds. Wightman, the 2022 champion, marked Great Britain's first medal so far in Tokyo.

In the men's long jump, Italy's Mattia Furlani became the youngest ever winner of the event at the age of 23, jumping a lifetime best of 8.39m. Jamaica's Tajay Gayle earned silver with a best of 8.34m, while Shi Yuhao of China took bronze with 8.33m.

Meanwhile, Faith Cherotich from Kenya dominated the women's 3,000m steeplechase, setting a championship record of 8:51.59. Reynold Cheruiyot from Kenya also claimed the bronze medal in the 1,500m race.

Andrew Coscoran from Dublin finished 12th in the 1,500m race with a time of 3:35.87. Coscoran, who was coached by Feidhlim Kelly during the World Championships, has declared his intention to compete in the 5,000m, with the heats set for Friday. Unfortunately, Great Britain's defending champion Josh Kerr finished last in the 1,500m race.

Seven of the top nine finishers from last year's Olympic final in Paris did not compete in this year's final, including Olympic champion Cole Hocker who was disqualified in his semi-final for jostling.

In other news, Niels Laros will attempt another shot in the 1,500m race, despite his disappointing performance in the previous event. Coscoran, who left himself with too much work to do during the decisive stage of the race, will also be looking to improve his performance in the upcoming 5,000m.

The World Athletics Championships continue to deliver exciting competition and unexpected results, with many more events yet to come. Stay tuned for updates!
