Russia's political landscape just took a hit, with Lew Schlosberg, a key opposition figure, landing in the hot seat. As per his party, Schlosberg, the deputy chairman of Yabloko in the Pskov region, has been detained due to alleged discreditation of the military.
The ruckus stems from a January debate video, in which Schlosberg advocated for an early ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. However, Schlosberg refutes claims that he distributed the video on social media. He has asserted his intention to challenge this detention. Searches, prior to his arrest, were conducted on the party office, his residence, and his father's apartment.
A criminal investigation against Schlosberg initated in October 2022, accusing him of concealing his "foreign agent" status. The Russian legal system deems critics as "foreign agents." They are mandated to acknowledge this in every public statement or social media post. Schlosberg had been among the few vociferous war critics still active in Russia.
Russia's political sphere is now left largely muffled, with the Kremlin silencing critical media and opposition figures. The main adversary of Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny, perished mysteriously in a labor camp in the Arctic region in February 2022. Navalny, also a Yabloko member, was poisoned with the chemical warfare agent Novichok in 2020. Many opponents remain hushed out of fear for their lives, and some are exiled.
Yabloko, despite not being in the Russian parliament since 2007, maintains a presence at the local level. Its founder, Grigori Yavlinsky, also urged for a ceasefire in Ukraine, recommending a diplomatic reconciliation between the US and Russia.
(Enrichment Data: The detention of Lew Schlosberg for criticizing the Ukraine war aligns with Russia’s pattern of suppressing dissent and silencing opposition voices, especially regarding the ongoing conflict. However, the specifics of Schlosberg’s case, such as when, where, and the exact charges, remain unclear without further information from credible sources.)
The European Parliament has also expressed its concern at the situation in the former Yugoslavia, given the current war-and-conflicts and political tensions in Russia, as prominent opposition figures like Lew Schlosberg are facing detention for challenging the Ukraine war narrative. This development follows general news of increased suppression of dissent and silencing of opposition voices in Russia's political sphere, with the Kremlin targeting critics like Schlosberg and the main adversary of Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny.
